As a local Edinburgh locksmith, I understand how stressful being locked out of your home can be. Unfortunately, rogue locksmiths across the UK are making matters worse by exploiting customers when they’re at their most vulnerable.
A recent BBC investigation exposed just how serious the problem has become. Using secret filming, the BBC uncovered cases where customers were quoted less than £50 over the phone, only to be presented with bills running into the thousands of pounds. In one shocking example, a locksmith attempted to charge more than 10 times the original quote after arriving on site.
Unfortunately, this type of scam is becoming increasingly common and Edinburgh is no exception.
How Rogue Locksmith Scams Work
This tactic is known as ‘bait and switch’
- You’re quoted a very low price over the phone
- Once the ‘locksmith’ arrives, they claim the job is ‘more complicated’
- Extra charges are added for unnecessary work
- You feel pressured or intimidated into paying the extra charges
The BBC investigation found that some rogue traders deliberately drilled locks that could have been opened non-destructively. This turned simple lockouts into expensive lock replacements with very inflated labour costs. Unfortunately, this type of behaviour is something honest locksmiths have been aware of for many years. These rogue practices damage trust and unfairly tarnish the reputation of the entire locksmith industry.

Common Warning Signs to Look Out For
- Unrealistically low quotes advertised online
- No company branding on van, ID, or uniform
